When the Wind Causes the Crash: Fault in Southern Alberta's Gales

Lethbridge locals joke about leaning into the wind, but on the highways it is no joke: sustained westerlies off the Rockies routinely gust past 100 km/h through the Lethbridge, Fort Macleod, and Pincher Creek corridor, blowing semis onto their sides, pushing vehicles across centre lines, and turning dust and ground blizzard into zero visibility. An "act of God" defence rarely holds

Commercial operators carry extra responsibility

Carriers operating empty or light-loaded trailers through the wind corridor face well-known rollover risk, and dispatch decisions matter: sending a high-profile unit through Fort Macleod in a 110 km/h gust warning can itself be negligence. Company weather policies, dispatch records, and driver communications are all discoverable, and they frequently show a crash was a business decision before it was a weather event.

Wind plus something else

Most "wind crashes" have a co-star: speed unsuited to gusts, fatigued correction, worn tires, or following too closely in blowing dust. Fault analysis separates what the wind did from what the driver did, using reconstruction, weather data (Environment Canada's records are precise), and vehicle data recorders. Even where wind is a genuine factor, apportioned fault still yields real compensation under Alberta's contributory negligence rules.
